Inspiration & comfort

Many people find comfort and solace in poetry which is why it’s so popular as part of a funeral tribute. We’ve created a collection of popular poetry that may offer some inspiration

To My Grandfather

A giant pine, magnificent and old
Stood staunch against the sky and all around
Shed beauty, grace and power.
Within its fold birds safely reared their young.
The velvet ground beneath was gentle, and the cooling shade gave cheer to passers by.
Its towering arms a landmark stood, erect and unafraid,
As if to say, “Fear naught from life’s alarms”.
It fell one day.
Where it had dauntless stood was loneliness and void.
But men who passed paid tribute – and said,
“To know this life was good,It left it’s mark on me.
Its work stands fast”.
And so it lives.
Such life no bonds can hold –
This giant pine, magnificent and old.

His Journey’s Just Begun

Don’t think of him as gone away
his journey’s just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched…
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.

Weep Not For Me

Weep not for me though I have gone
Into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul’s sweet flight
I am at peace, my soul’s at rest
There is no need for tears
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years
There is no pain, I suffer not
The fear is now all gone
Put now these things out of your thoughts
In your memory I live on
Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death
But celebrate my life

A Love Like No Other

From the time I was born
I guess you would know
Ten perfect fingers
Ten little toes
When you first put your finger in my tiny hand that’s when I first knew
You were my papa no one else would do
As I grow older
and reach for the sky
My Papa is still there
to keep that twinkle in my eye
When I need someone to hold me
you never say I’m too big
You pick me up and squeeze me
and whisper you’re my little kid
Most other people don’t understand me
or maybe just not as well
That’s why you’re the one I run to
when I have something to tell
I love you Papa
as you can see
I’m so glad
that you’re a part of me

Your Spirit

I know that no matter what
You will always be with me.
When life separates us
I’ll know it is only your soul
Saying goodbye to your body
But your spirit will be with me always.
When I see a bird chirping on a nearby branch
I will know it is you singing to me.
When a butterfly brushes gently by me so care freely
I will know it is you assuring me you are free from pain.
When the gentle fragrance of a flower catches my attention
I will know it is you reminding me
To appreciate the simple things in life.
When the sun shining through my window awakens me
I will feel the warmth of your love.
When I hear the rain pitter patter against my window sill
I will hear your words of wisdom
And will remember what you taught me so well’
That without rain trees cannot grow
Without rain flowers cannot bloom
Without life’s challenges I cannot grow strong.
When I look out to the sea

Grampa

We’ll always remember
that special smile,
that caring heart,
that warm embrace,
you always gave us.
You being there
for Grandma and us
through good and bad times,
no matter what.
We’ll always remember
you Grampa because
there’ll never be another one
to replace you in our hearts,
and the love we will always
have for you.

A Poem for Grandpa

Grandpa, you were just a boy,
So many years ago.
You had your loves and had your dreams,
You watched us come and go.
You watched us make the same mistakes,
That you had made before,
But that just made you hold us tight,
And love us all the more.
We haven’t always thought about
The things that you have seen.
To us you’ve just been ‘Grandpa’,
No thought of who you’ve been.
But we remember now in love,
Your life from start to end,
And we’re just glad we knew you,
As Grandpa, and as Friend.

We had a Wonderful Grandad

We had a wonderful grandfather,
One who never really grew old;
His smile was made of sunshine,
And his heart was solid gold;
His eyes were as bright as shining stars,
And in his cheeks fair roses you see.
We had a wonderful grandfather,
And that’s the way it will always be.
But take heed, because
He’s still keeping an eye on all of us,
So let’s make sure
He will like what he sees.

Love in Every Tear

O precious, tiny, sweet little one
You will always be to me.
So perfect, pure, and innocent
Just as you were meant to be.
We dreamed of you and of your life
And all that it would be.
We waited and longed for you to come.
And join our family. We never had the chance to play,
To laugh, to rock, to wiggle.
We long to hold you, touch you now
And listen to you giggle.
I’ll always be your mother,
He’ll always be your dad.
You will always be our child,
The child that we had.
But now you’re gone…but yet you’re here
We’ll sense you everywhere.
You are our sorrow and our joy,
There’s love in every tear.
Just know our love goes deep and strong
We’ll forget you never
The child we had, but never had
And yet will have forever!

Fingerprints

Your fingerprints are on my heart.
Fingerprints that teach me about caring.
Fingerprints that teach me about love.
Fingerprints that teach me about courage.
Fingerprints that teach me about hope.
Fingerprints that bring me closer to my loved ones.
Fingerprints that bring me closer to myself.
In the time I cared for you my whole life changed —
never to be the same again
All this from tiny fingerprints that touch my heart.
You will live in my heart forever – never to be forgotten.
I will always love you.
You are my child.

Dear Child In Heaven

You were a blessing to us all
you were a special child.
And we’re so glad God sent you
to be with us awhile. You filled our home with happiness
and made our life complete.
The time we had with you
was far too short, but oh so sweet. Some things we don’t find easy
to accept or understand.
Until we realize they’re part of
our Creator’s perfect plan. Now it comforts us to know
you’re with the angels up above.
While in our hearts we hold you close
Surrounded by our love.

The Cord

We are connected, my child and I,
by an invisible cord not seen by the eye.
It’s not like the cord that connects us at birth
this cord can’t be seen by any on earth. This cord does it’s work right from the start
it binds us together attached to my heart
I know that it’s there though no one can see
the invisible cord from my child to me.The strength of this cord it’s hard to describe
it can’t be destroyed it can’t be denied.
It’s stronger than any cord man could create
it withstands the test, can hold any weightAnd though you are gone, though you’re not here with me
the cord is still there but no one can see
It pulls at my heart, I am bruised…I am sore
but this cord is my lifeline as never before.I’m thankful that my heart connects us this way
a mother and child, death can’t take it away!

Asleep

Slumber sweetly little one
Upon your dusty bed.
The earth be both your blanket
And pillow for your head. When the long, dark night is over
And heaven begins its reign
I promise you my darling
I will see you again.

Angel Wings

A precious angel slipped away, no one heard a cry.
No time for Dad and Mommy to sing me lullabies.
My time with you was much too short. I had to leave too soon,
But love had joined us as I grew inside my Mommy’s womb.It wove its way within our hearts, in all our hopes and dreams,
Until the very purest love became my tiny wings.
Although I could not stay with you, I knew right from the start,
That once you felt your angel’s love, you’d keep me in your hearts.I’m just a little angel but my time was not in vain.
As dark clouds that surround you give way unto the sun,
My precious parents you will see that any heart will sing,
If only for a moment it is brushed by angel wings.

These are my footprints

These are my footprints, so perfect and so small.
These tiny footprints, never touched the ground at all.
Not one tiny footprint, for now I have my wings.
These tiny footprints were meant for other things.
You will hear my tiny footprints, in the patter of the rain.
Gentle drops like angels tears, of joy and not from pain.
You will see my tiny footprints, in each butterflies’ lazy dance.
I’ll let you know I’m with you, if you give me just a chance.
You will see my tiny footprints, in the rustle of the leaves.
I will whisper names into the wind, and call each one that grieves.
Most of all, these tiny footprints, are found in mummy’s heart,
’cause even though I’m gone now, we’ll never truly part.”

Dad’s Poem – to his baby

We never had the chance to play, to laugh, to rock, to wiggle
We long to hold you, touch you now, and listen to your giggle.
She’ll always be your mother, and I’ll always be your Dad,
You will always be our child – the child we never had.But now you’re gone … but yet you’re here. We sense you everywhere,
You are our sorrow and our joy. There’s love in every tear.
Just know our love goes deep and strong, that we’ll forget you never,
The child we had, but never had – and yet will have forever.

Fly

Fly, fly little wing
Fly beyond imagining
The softest cloud, the whitest dove
Upon the wind of heaven’s love
Past the planets and the stars
Leave this lonely world of ours
Escape the sorrow and the pain
And fly again
Fly, fly precious one
Your endless journey has begun
Take your gentle happiness
Far too beautiful for this
Cross over to the other shore
There is peace forevermore
But hold this memory bittersweet
Until we meet
Fly, fly do not fear
Don’t waste a breath, don’t shed a tear
Your heart is pure, your soul is free
Be on your way, don’t wait for me
Above the universe you’ll climb
On beyond the hands of time
The moon will rise, the sun will set
But I won’t forget
Fly, fly little wing
Fly where only angels sing
Fly away, the time is right
Go now, find the light

Her Name Sings My Soul

The mention of my child’s name
May bring tears to my eyes,
But it never fails to bring
Music to my ears.
If you are really my friend,
Let me hear the beautiful music of her name.
It soothes my broken heart
And sings to my soul.

Little Hands

Your little hands so soft and still, I held them in my own,
Whilst wishing we had more than just a handprint coming home.I studied every nail and line and every inch of you,
And cried for all the things your little hands would never do.I’d never get to clean your hands, there’d be no messy play,
l’d never see your fingers point to things you’d try to say.
I’d never hear the sound they’d make whilst splashing in the bath,
Or how they’d cover up your lips whilst trying not to laugh.I wish so much I could have taught you how to write your name,
Or watched your little hands outstretched to play a catching game.Your little hands would never feel a scrape or gain a scar,
Nor would they play an instrument or learn to drive a car.Your little hands, my little hands, forever left unchanging,
No exploring, falling, climbing, drawing and no ageing,
My only wish for you and I is that we had more time,
’Cause I could have spent forever with your little hands in mine.

Too Soon

This was a life that had hardly begun
No time to find your place in the Sun
No time to do all you could have done
But we loved you enough for a lifetime
No time to enjoy the world and it’s wealth
No time to take life down off the shelf
No time to sing the songs of yourself
Though you had enough love for a lifetime
Those who live long endure sadness and tears
But you’ll never suffer the sorrowing years
No betrayal, no anger, no hatred, no fears
Just love – Only love – In your lifetime

Little Snowdrop

The world may never notice
If a Snowdrop doesn’t bloom,
Or even pause to wonder
If the petals fall too soon.
But every life that ever forms,
Or ever comes to be,
Touches the world in some small way
For all eternity.
The little one we longed for
Was swiftly here and gone.
But the love that was then planted
Is a light that still shines on.
And though our arms are empty,
Our hearts know what to do.
For every beating of our hearts
Says that we love you.

I’m there in your heart

Right now I’m in a different place
And though we seem apart
I’m closer than I ever was,
I’m there inside your heart.
I’m with you when you greet each day
And while the sun shines bright
I’m there to share the sunsets, too
I’m with you every night.
I’m with you when the times are good
To share a laugh or two,
And if a tear should start to fall
I’ll still be there for you.    And when that day arrives
That we no longer are apart,
I’ll smile and hold you close to me,
Forever in my heart.

One at Rest

Think of me as one at rest,
for me you should not weep
I have no pain no troubled thoughts
for I am just asleepThe living thinking me that was,
is now forever still
And life goes on without me now,
as time forever will.If your heart is heavy now
because I’ve gone away
Dwell not long upon it friend
For none of us can stayThose of you who liked me,
I sincerely thank you all
And those of you who loved me,
I thank you most of all.And in my fleeting lifespan,
as time went rushing by
I found some time to hesitate,
to laugh, to love, to cryMatters it now if time began
If time will ever cease?
I was here, I used it all,
and now I am at peace.

A butterfly lights beside us

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam, and for a
brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world:
but then it flies again. And though we wish it could
have stayed, we feel so lucky to have seen it.

So go and run free

So go and run free with the angels
Dance around the golden clouds
For the lord has chosen you to be with him
And we should feel nothing but proud
Although he has taken you from us
And our pain a lifetime will last
Your memory will never escape us
But make us glad for the time we did have
Your face will always be hidden
Deep inside our hearts
Each precious moment you gave us
Shall never, ever depart
So go and run free with the angels
As they sing so tenderly
And please be sure to tell them
To take good care of you for me

A Mother’s Prayer

I pray you’ll be my eyes
And watch her where she goes
And help her to be wise
Help me to let goEvery mother’s prayer
Every child knows
Lead her to a place
Guide her with your grace
To a place where she’ll be safeI pray she finds your light
And holds it in her heart
As darkness falls each night
Remind her where you areEvery mother’s prayer
Every child knows
Need to find a place
Guide her to a place
Give her faith so she’ll be safeLead her to a place
Guide her with your grace
To a place where she’ll be safe

Angel of my Tears

How do you love a person
who never got to be,
or try to envision a face
you never got to see?
How do you mourn the death of one
who never got to live.
When there’s nothing to feel good about
and nothing to forgive?
…I love you, my little baby,
my companion of the night.
Wandering through my lonely hours,
beautiful and bright.
What does it mean to die
before you ever were born,
To live the lovely night of life
and never see the dawn?
Ah! My little baby,
you lived like anyone!
Life’s a burst of joy and pain.
And then like yours, it’s done.
I love you, my little baby,
just as if you’d lived for years.
No more, no less, I think of you,
the Angel of my tears.

Tiny Angel

For brief and fleeting moment, an angel touched the ground;
With tiny wings and halo, and sweet, soft angel sounds.Blessing the lives of others, in beauty and in grace;
Those who saw the angel, knew God had kissed his tiny face.The angel came for reasons we may not understand;
A journey brief, with gifts so great, and guided by God’s hand.So, rest now tiny angel, your work on earth is through;
In the beauty of God’s perfect love we saw His gift in you.

I Made It Home

I just wanted to let you know that I made it home.
Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh, so new.
I wish that you could close your eyes so you could see it too.
Please try not to be sad for me.
Try to understand.
God is taking care of me …
I’m in the shelter of His hands.
Here there is no sadness, and no sorrow, and no pain.
Here there is no crying, and I’ll never hurt again.
Here it is so peaceful, when all the angels sing.
I really have to go for now …
I’ve just got to try my wings.

Twinkle Twinkle

Twinkle, twinkle little star,
Up in heaven is where you are,
Flying high and twinkling bright
My guiding star, my shining light,
Twinkle, twinkle little star,
My perfect angel is what you are.
